Bluey climbs Mount Etna with new friend Sofia

CARO DIARIO (Dear Diary),

What a pawsome week this has been!

After almost TRE MESI (3 months) of summer school holidays, school here is back to normal with early starts (at 8:00 am) and early finishes (at 1:30 pm) and lots of learning, playing and making new friends.

This week I met my new friend Sofia and her family, with whom I got to travel all the way to Catania to see I NONNI (the grandparents).

The road trip lasted 2 hours. Sofia, Greta (her sister), Francesco (her brother) and I played IO VEDO (I spy with my little eye) and sang SE SEI FELICE E TU LO SAI (if you’re happy and you know it)

We got to Catania in the morning and, after dropping off our bags and saying hi to NONNA Lina and NONNO Franco, we went for a walk around the city centre.

The streets were so full of life: there were markets, people A PASSEGGIO (going for a stroll) chatting and children playing.

From the moment we arrived, I could feel the excitement in the air. Catania is such a vibrant city, with the majestic Mount Etna watching over everything.

LO SAPEVI CHE (did you know that) Mount Etna is the highest VULCANO (volcano) in Europe (3,329 meters tall with a base circumference of about 150 kilometres) and one of the most active in the world?

E LO SAPEVI CHE (did you know that) it is an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013?

The highlight of the day was visiting the PIAZZA DEL DUOMO with LA FONTANA DELL’ELEFANTE (the Elephant Fountain).

The Elephant Fountain is a monument located in the centre of the piazza, it was designed by architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini between 1735 and 1737 and is a symbol of Catania.

In the evening we went out for pizza at a local restaurant. It was SO tasty! Sofia and I tried the famous PIZZA ALLA NORMA, topped with MELANZANE (eggplants), and I must say, I’ve never tasted anything like it before.

The next day was even more exciting! NONNA LINA (grandma Lina) made Greta, Sofia, Francesco and me a delicious hot chocolate and prepared some sandwiches for the trip.

We drove up Mount Etna and the view was absolutely breathtaking! The air up there was so fresh, and the clouds seemed so close!

It was a bit scary at first, but then I remembered how brave I can be. Sofia and I pretended we were explorers on a great adventure, climbing lava rocks.

After the adventure we stopped in a beautiful field of poppies where we had a picnic and played NASCONDINO ( hide and seek) in the field.

Saying Goodbye DOMENICA MATTINA (Sunday morning) was bittersweet because it was our last day with NONNO and NONNA. We all went out for a special Sicilian breakfast with GRANITA E BRIOCHE. It was so refreshing and yummy!!

Love,

Bluey
